Workshop #4: "Everythng Your Kids Always Wanted to Know About Sex"” January 20 at 7PM
All children are naturally curious and eventually want to know about "the birds and the bees." Unfortunately, LGBTQ parents tend not to be much more open about sex than their straight counterparts. Adults may talk to kids about reproduction, but hesitate to talk about sex, thereby sending message that there is something secretive about sex and sexual pleasure, and creating a barrier to open communication on this vital subject. This workshop will explore the types of questions that children often ask, and help address parental anxieties about answering them. Terry Boggis is the Director of Center Kids (the largest regional LGBT families program in the US) and is responsible for all aspects of "Center Kids" programs, including services; recruitment, orientation and supervision of staff and volunteers; training and diversity education, and evaluating needs of families in crisis. She has contributed to articles and essays on Igbt family issues in media, including The New York Time, Our Right to Love (Ginny Vida, ed., Simon & Schuster. 1995), The Lesbian and Gay Almanacs (Berkeley Books. 1996), Queer Families, Queer Politics (Bernstein & Reimann, eds., Columbia University Press, 2001) and Home Fronts: Controversies in Nontraditional Parenting (Jess Wells, ed., Alyson Books. 20001) and others.
